Artists We Love: Andrea D'Aquino
Artist, designer, illustrator and all-around creative force, Andrea D’Aquino makes some seriously cool collages. Initially, I fell in love with the rich textural interest of her mixed media work, then found myself captivated by her stunning use of color. Her combination of hues is spot-on, and for someone who usually prefers a more muted palette, I’m surprisingly obsessed with the boisterous colors. I’m further drawn to the childlike element of playful surprise prevalent throughout her pieces and how it’s blended with deeper symbolism and meaning.
A BEAUTIFUL MARRIAGE BETWEEN PRIMITIVE AND COMPLEX
We as viewers, are the lucky recipients of D'Aquino's talented ability to synthesize raw elements into striking works of art on paper. A perusal of her work leads us on a path to innocent fun and inquisitive what-ifs. Her pieces combine a bold clarity with intriguing details and portray a curious juxtaposition of elements that evoke delight in the unexpected. The mixed media/collage pieces she regularly shares on her instagram @andreadaquino_pictures, are something I very much look forward to. It’s one of my all-time favorite IG feeds and just makes my heart happy.
D’Aquino’s work can also be found illustrating the pages of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2015), where she offers a unique interpretation of the classic tale in lively, captivating images. Recently, she published a lovely book that’s both an exploration of her work in collage and an inspiring workbook of sorts to get you started making your own. Once upon a Piece of Paper was published in 2016, and I have a treasured copy that I’ll be featuring soon in another post. If you’d like to get your hands on either of these books, they can be found here and here.
Andrea D'Aquino lives in New York City, surrounded by a gamut of cultural expression, with her handsome schnauzer, Marcello. For more information, here is her personal site: www.andreadaquino.com.
